**En attendant les barbares** (Waiting for the Barbarians) is most famously the title of J.M. Coetzee's 1980 novel, which depicts a Magistrate in a remote frontier outpost of an unnamed empire who begins to question the regime's cruelty toward nomadic peoples it labels "barbarians," exploring themes of torture, colonialism, and moral complicity. The title also references Constantine Cavafy's 1904
