New light on Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony
The "locus amoenus"—the idyllic spot—describes a place that has inspired music, art, and writing since antiquity. This fascination with a place in nature, a Garden of Eden on earth, so to speak, forms the foundation of the "pastoral" aesthetic as we know it today.
