After General Stark
General John Stark, a hero of the American Revolution best known for leading American forces to victory at the Battle of Bennington in 1777, remained a celebrated figure long after the war. His legacy endured through the generations, so much so that he is remembered today not only for his military leadership but also for coining New Hampshire's famous motto, "Live Free or Die."
