Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg
Tannhäuser is an opera by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1845, based on the medieval German legend of the minstrel-knight Tannhäuser. It tells the story of his struggle between sinful sensual pleasure (embodied by the goddess Venus) and redemption through pure, spiritual love (embodied by Elisabeth), set against the backdrop of a singing contest held by minstrels at Wartburg Castle.
