During his presidency (1974–1981), Valéry Giscard d'Estaing periodically appeared on television sharing a dinner in the home of an ordinary French family. These televised "dinners with the French" were a political communication stunt designed to project an image of a president close to everyday citizens and attentive to their concerns.
