**Candide** is Voltaire's satirical novella (1759) about a naive young man, Candide, who is expelled from a comfortable castle and wanders the world enduring endless disasters—war, earthquake, and betrayal—while his tutor Pangloss insists this is "the best of all possible worlds." Through Candide's journey and eventual conclusion to simply "cultivate our garden," Voltaire mocks blind optimism, phi
