**Kerbschnitzen** is a traditional Swiss carnival custom (particularly in Basel and central Switzerland) where participants carve turnips into lantern faces, place candles inside, and carry them through the streets while making noise—often accompanied by broom-sweeping, clanging, and playful mischief—to drive out winter and welcome the coming spring.
