Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar (100–44 BCE) was a Roman general and statesman whose conquest of Gaul, civil war against Pompey, and rise to dictatorial power effectively ended the Roman Republic. He was assassinated by a group of senators, including Brutus and Cassius, on the Ides of March (March 15, 44 BCE), leading to further civil wars and ultimately the rise of his heir, Augustus, as Rome's first emperor.
