Don Carlos de Austria
Don Carlos de Austria (1545–1568) was the eldest son and heir of King Philip II of Spain, whose increasingly erratic behavior and alleged conspiracy led his father to imprison him in 1568; he died in confinement months later, an event that became the subject of enduring legend and works like Schiller's play and Verdi's opera *Don Carlos*.
