The "Wende" (German for "turning point") refers to the period in 1989–1990 when East Germany underwent a peaceful revolution that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the communist SED regime, and ultimately German reunification. It marked the decisive shift from a divided, socialist Germany to a unified democratic state.
