Lachrymae
"Lachrymae" most commonly refers to Benjamin Britten's *Lachrymae, Op. 48* (1950), a work for viola and piano (later orchestrated) that consists of a set of variations reflecting on John Dowland's song "If my complaints could passions move." The title, Latin for "tears," captures the elegiac, mournful character of this piece built on Elizabethan lute-song material.
