**Mario und der Zauberer** (Mario and the Magician) is a novella by Thomas Mann, published in 1930. It tells the story of a hypnotist named Cipolla whose manipulative performances on an Italian resort town serve as an allegory for the rise of fascism and the seductive power of totalitarian authority—culminating when one audience member, Mario, breaks free and shoots the magician dead.
