Metamorphosen
*Metamorphosen* is a composition by Richard Strauss, written in 1944–45 for 23 solo strings, widely interpreted as a mourning elegy for the destruction of German culture and cities during World War II. Its title means "metamorphoses," and it transforms a theme from Beethoven's *Eroica* symphony into a deeply sorrowful, reflective work.
