"Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" (Lady Macbeth von Mzensk) is an opera by Dmitri Shostakovich (1934), based on Nikolai Leskov's novella. It tells the story of Katerina Ismailova, a lonely merchant's wife in 19th-century Russia who, driven by oppression and passion, embarks on a love affair and a series of murders—including of her father-in-law and husband—that ultimately lead to her downfall and suicide.
