Venus and Adonis
**Venus and Adonis** is a narrative poem by William Shakespeare (1593) in which the goddess Venus desperately pursues and tries to seduce the handsome young hunter Adonis, who rejects her advances in favor of hunting. After he ignores her warnings and is killed by a wild boar, Venus's grief transforms his spilled blood into the anemone flower.
