The Touristenverein der Naturfreunde (Friends of Nature) local group in Halle was founded in November 1908 as one of the first in Germany, attracting members primarily from workers' party sympathizers; a second group formed in Ammendorf in 1920, and together they reached about 500 members in the mid-1920s before the organization was banned during the war years.
