Venus & Adonis
*Venus & Adonis* is a narrative poem by William Shakespeare (1593) in which the goddess Venus desperately tries to seduce the beautiful young Adonis, who rejects her advances in favor of hunting—only to be killed by a wild boar, leaving Venus to mourn his death and immortalize his memory in the flower that bears his name.
