"Hänsel und Gretel" is a classic German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm, in which two siblings abandoned in the forest discover a gingerbread house belonging to a witch, who attempts to fatten and eat them—until the clever children outwit her and escape home with treasure. It is also the title of an 1893 opera by Engelbert Humperdinck based on this tale.
